A 49 year old male has appeared at Teeside Magistrates Court charged with Racially Aggravated fearpr - Tuesday 10 July 2018

A 49 year old male has appeared at Teeside Magistrates Court charged with Racially Aggravated fearprovocation of violence and possession of cannabis which took place in Hartlepool. The male had been drinking alcohol earlier in the day and became racially abusive towards a taxi driver who would not take him home due to his behaviour. The male became racially abusive towards the driver and was arrested at the scene. Upon the males arrest and transportation to custody, the male made further racially aggravated remarks in the presence of the attending officers. He was searched and found to be in possession of cannabis. The male was sentenced to 18 month Community order 22 days Rehabilitation Activity Requirement 625 to pay in costs 100 compensation 85 Victim Surcharge The sentence was uplifted due to the racially aggravated nature of the crime. Everyone has the right to live without the fear of abuse whether verbal, physical or sexual. We will support victims to report incidents of abuse to allow the courts to prosecute the people responsible. Hate Crime towards any person will not be tolerated in Cleveland.
