Cleveland Police has funded intensive work into domestic abuse as part of Operation Phoenix. Extra officers will work on weekends over the summer months, when traditionally the number of domestic abuse incidents is higher. Specialist support staff will patrol on duty with front line uniformed staff and respond swiftly to offer effective support and tailored intervention to some of the most vulnerable people in our communities. The Domestic Abuse Support Car allows additional time to be spent with victims to offer help, including transporting victims to alternative housing for their safety. These officers are solely dedicated to attending these types of incidents and tackle any immediate, and longer term safeguarding issues. In addition we have a support worker based in the Force Control Room who calls the victims after police have attended, to offer specialist advice and support. This includes referrals to independent support agencies for longer term counselling and assistance. Last weekend, the domestic abuse cars attended 32 incidents and the support worker followed this up by calling 50 victims to offer advice and support. Detective Chief Inspector Cath Galloway said, The extra resources provided through Operation Phoenix have enabled us to have further specialist skills available and additional time to spend with victims in order to deal more holistically with the issues. All of this work is carried out in partnership with local support agencies such as My Sisters Place, EVA Womens Aid, Harbour and Foundation. Their help is essential in tackling domestic abuse so that we can prevent and reduce the likelihood of future domestic incidents and importantly safeguard people within our communities and help them to break free from the cycle of abuse these victims find themselves locked into. Phoenix is more than just responding to incidents quicker, it is a proactive step towards eliminating domestic abuse and affording victims and their children long term protection from harm. Operation Phoenix is a summer long operation to improve public service, help vulnerable people, tackle serious violence and prevent crime, officers have been funded to respond to domestic abuse incidents.
