Council unveils new coastal sculpture COUNCILLORS in Hartlepool have unveiled details of a new sculpture as part of the ongoing work to breathe new life into Seaton Carew. A 4 metre high sculpture by Hartlepool artist Stuart Langley will form part of a major package of seafront improvements by Hartlepool Council following a successful 600,000 funding bid to the Governments Coastal Communities Fund. Stuart, who specialises in light, neon and glass, was one of nine artists shortlisted by the Council earlier this year to produce a seafront sculpture aimed at linking key areas of the town including Church Street via public art. A public vote followed with Stuarts submission receiving over a third of the 1,591 votes cast. Called Waves, the artwork will be created using steel and glass to reflect the towns strong industrial and maritime heritage, encapsulated within a circleshaped clear cast acrylic material. It will be located on the promenade near Seaton Reach. Stuart Langley who has exhibited at several exhibitions, including in Europe, was commissioned to produce work for Durhams Lumiere Festival in 2013 which provided the springboard for his fulltime artistic career. He commented I am absolutely delighted to be a part of the ongoing regeneration of Seaton Carew through the creation of an ambitious artwork which references Hartlepools industrial heritage and current momentum of development. In the coming months people will have the opportunity to contribute to the final sculpture via local sea glass collections which will encourage a genuine sense of ownership of the artwork destined to be a part of Hartlepools cultural landscape for years to come. Councillor Kevin Cranney, chair of the Councils Other planned improvements at Seaton Carew over the next twelve months will include the creation of a new outdoor leisure park with water jets, play equipment, beach huts, picnic tables, crazy golf course and new attractive landscaping. The Grade II Listed Bus Station and Clock Tower will also be rejuvenated, complete with new footpaths and a gateway feature
