In mid June 2019 police in Hartlepool uncovered a cannabis farm in the Burn Valley area of town and as part of the dismantling process officers seized compost and plant pots. Normally these items would be destroyed but rather than see it disposed of and unused it is nice to see it go to a good cause and police often donate items to schools or community projects within Hartlepool. When Acting Inspector Adrian Dack learned of the vandalism to the garden equipment at Catcote Futures on 11th June 2019 it was an easy decision as to where the seized equipment could be utilised. The Assistant Headteacher Barry Currell invited Inspector Dack, PC Coggin and PCSO Say to the Learning and Skills Centre on Warren Road today, Monday 1st July 2019, in order to drop off the items and meet some of the students who work in the garden. Students were on hand to unload the van and the officers hardly had to lift a finger to carry the heavy bags of compost onto the site. Catcote Futures is a centre which teaches employability skills to students aged 19 years and the garden section of the site is only a small part of what is on offer for the students who have physical and learning disabilities. Officers were given a tour of the site by Mr Currell and were shown the damage caused to the garden as well as the other fantastic facilities which include a salon, print shop and a pottery amongst other things. AInsp. Dack said What Mr Currell and the rest of the staff are doing at Catcote Futures is fantastic and the site is a credit to the town. The damage caused by vandals is unacceptable and we will not tolerate such behaviour, enquiries are ongoing to identify those responsible. By donating equipment as we have today we are able to give back in some small part to the establishments within our community who help enrich the town and the lives of the people who live here. It also ensures that something good can come from something bad. Thank you to Mr Currell and all of the staff and students who made them feel so welcome.
