So far in 2017 there have been more than 600 reported incidents of thefts from vehicles in Hartlepool. You can help make your car less attractive to criminals by following these simple steps. Never leave anything on show. Phone or sat nav mounts, charging cables, loose change in the ashtray, sunglasses on the visor, jackets or bags on the back seat all of these if left on show may attract a thief to your car. Dont leave anything in your vehicle overnight. This is especially true for works vans with tools and equipment in them dont run the risk of losing your livelihood. If your car has an alarm, make sure it is switched on. Advertise that you have an alarm with window stickers. Something so simple as a sticker on the window that says This vehicle is alarmed may be all that is needed for a thief leave your car alone. Lock your vehicle! It may seem simple but many of the thefts from motor vehicles occur because the owner forgot to lock it! Most modern cars have a push button fob to lock the car and pressing the button as you walk away is a common thing to do. Try and get into the habit of locking your car and checking it is locked by trying the handles. Members of the NPT are constantly spotting unlocked cars on their patrols and attempting to alert the owners. If the Police can spot unlocked cars you can guarantee that criminals can too. Dont leave windows open whilst the vehicle is unattended. In the hot summer weather it can be tempting to leave windows half down to keep the car cool, but it takes only seconds for a thief to remove items from your car through an open window.
