The Hartlepool Trading Standards team have had several reports of scam calls this week.

The first

The Hartlepool Trading Standards team have had several reports of scam calls this week. The first is the HMRC Debt scam call where a message from 02039621179, will be left on an answer machine claiming that there is a debt owed and you should press one to speak to them. The representative will work in an Asian call centre and will claim legal action is pending unless an amount of money is paid within a very short deadline. They are relying on the fear of you being arrested for failing to pay to make vulnerable members of society part with their money. The second is a variant of the Microsoft Scam. A call will be received from 01097376685, and a message is played with an American accent stating that the intended victims router has been compromised and they should press 1 to speak to a technician. If 1 is pressed, the victim will be put through to an Asian call centre who will then claim to work for BT. The technician will then state that your router has been hacked by a person from the United States and was in use between 1230am and 430am. The technician will then ask for access to your computer and proceed to try and scam you. Both a most definitely SCAMs and should not be responded to. Please share this information with your family and friends. If you want further advice on this matter, please do not hesitate to contact the Trading Standards Team on 01429 523362.
